Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes are among those who will be honoured at a gala event this Friday night at Hillstone, St Lucia.

The 2010 Annual Blues and Sports Awards Dinner will celebrate outstanding sporting achievements by past and present University of Queensland athletes.

As the major event in calendar, around 200 guests are expected to attend, with Ray Ebert, former manager of the Australian Olympic rowing team, acting as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

The event is named after its namesake award, a Blue, a recognition for high sporting achievement that has been awarded to Õ¬Äе¼º½ athletes since 1912.

Proudly sponsored by Õ¬Äе¼º½, Õ¬Äе¼º½ Sport, Powerade and Photoline, the event involves the presentation of seven perpetual trophies, along with the prestigious Blue and Half-Blue awards and announcement of the 2009 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

This year’s nominees include 2008 Paralympic swimming silver medallist Blake Cochrane, and water polo players Robert Maitland and Anthony Martin.

Both athletes helped lead Australia to victory in the 2009 men’s final at the 25th World University Games in Serbia, with Mr Maitland also chosen as the Australian flag bearer for the opening ceremony.

The athletes who are receiving awards this year are established and rising stars in diverse sports including swimming, rugby union, weightlifting and cricket.

Media are welcome to attend.
