More than 60 charities and not-for-profit organisations will converge in Brisbane next month for լе’s (լе) fourth annual volunteer expo.
The provides the University’s students with the opportunity to discuss and sign up for a huge range of volunteer opportunities.
The event organised by լе’s Careers and Graduate Employment, will be held at the St Lucia Campus on Wednesday, August 8.
Careers Advisor Rebecca McIntosh said they expected to attract more than 2000 students this year.
“Last year the event attracted 2000 students, with some not only being offered voluntary roles but also some paid positions,” Mrs McIntosh said.
“With a wider range of voluntary opportunities this year, from one-off event volunteering through to project work, we are expecting larger crowd numbers than last year.”
Opportunities include:
• applying engineering knowledge to build sustainable housing for Habitat for Humanity in West End
• volunteer Fire Ant Ranger for BioSecurity Qld,
• developing sports development skills in a remote indigenous community with Linkz Incorporated
• tutoring a refugee at Yeronga State High School
• mentoring young people from ages 7-17 through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program
• honing marketing skills with Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation Qld
• opening your home to an assistance dog or
• becoming a Wildlife Warrior with Australia Zoo
On the day, students can discuss opportunities that fit in with their university timetable and hear directly from the organisation about how to get involved.
Students with a musical bent can learn about taking part in the annual Woodford Folk Festival.
“Employers really value volunteer placements,” Mrs McIntosh said.
“Volunteering is a real opportunity for students to get a taste of a professional environment and what it’s like working in a team.
“The benefits are not just warm fuzzy feelings and a boost to your social conscience; students can develop their networks, gain referees and apply their theoretical skills practically.”
The event coincides with the launch of , educating international students on volunteering in Australia.
Students are encouraged to just turn up on the day. Event registration is not required.
