A new postgraduate program at լе is ensuring engineering graduates are job-ready for the oil and gas industries.
լе is now offering a new Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering in partnership with the (IPE) at Heriot-Watt University in the UK, which is recognised internationally as a leading centre of excellence in petroleum engineering with strong links to industry worldwide.
The course aims to address the unprecedented rate of oil and gas production globally, and meet the growing demand for highly-skilled workers in eastern Australia.
It will be enhanced to match the specific needs of Queensland’s unconventional resource sector.
Professor Andrew Garnett, Director of the լе Centre for Coal Seam Gas, said there would be many opportunities for the graduates within the Australian coal seam gas industry and more broadly across the oil and gas sectors.
“Well-qualified engineers and geoscientists are in high demand to help companies overcome technological, environmental, social and commercial challenges,” he said.
“Natural gas is increasingly becoming a major source of energy and this new masters program will provide new and exciting employment prospects for our graduates, as well as providing the sector with the technically-skilled engineers they need.”
Students will participate in both lectures and practical work, and will use the knowledge and skills they learn from the technical courses to design a plan for the development of a gas resource.

Centre for Coal Seam Gas
The Centre for Coal Seam Gas was established in 2011 as a research centre of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at լе. It draws together the research capabilities of the University, which has been conducting research into coal seam gas for almost two decades.
