Make your next visit to լе’s St Lucia campus a memorable one by touring the new Sustainability Walk.
Showcasing 34 stations, the Sustainability Walk tells a unique story and unveils a fascinating picture of a few of the many environmentally sustainable features on campus.
Property and Facilities Deputy Director Mr Geoff Dennis said opening the walk was an important step in highlighting the University’s commitment across a range of projects towards environmental sustainability.
“The walk was designed to provide an overview of the wide variety of sustainability initiatives and cutting-edge research being explored by the University,” Mr Dennis said.
The walk includes: Australia’s only concentrating photovoltaic array found outside of Alice Springs; լе’s Solar Research Resource Centre where industry, school and community groups learn about renewable energy; and a natural habitat for the protected bush stone-curlew bird.
Each destination is organised across five key themes of sustainability: renewable energy, biodiversity, water, transport and recycling and waste.
Twenty-six of the 34 markers are located in the լе Lakes precinct, showcasing the beautiful St Lucia grounds abundant with native birds, animals and aquatic species.
Static signage provides details of the theme, with text and photographs capturing visitor interest and encouraging appreciation of the significance of the sustainability features on campus.
Property and Facilities Sustainability Coordinator Ms Suzanne Davis said the Sustainability Walk catered for everyone.
“The walk is designed so visitors can choose their own path, depending on their interests,” Ms Davis said.
“The St Lucia campus has always been a popular destination with the general public for its beautiful lakes precinct and sandstone buildings, and the Sustainability Walk provides an exciting new way for visitors to explore undiscovered corners of the campus.”
