A newly appointed Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General will discuss mass atrocity prevention and human rights protection when he visits  next week.

Ivan Šimonović is the former Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York.

His new role is to further the political, institutional and operational development of the Responsibility to Protect principle, as set out by the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Å imonović will discuss Mass Atrocity and Human Rights Protection at a public seminar at Õ¬Äе¼º½ on Monday, October 24 from 4.45pm to 6.30pm.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Executive Dean will host the seminar, in the Terrace Room.

“Mr Å imonović’s appointment comes at a time when the world needs the Responsibility to Protect principle and actions more than ever,” Professor Dunne said.

During Mr Å imonović’s visit, Professor Alex Bellamy – Director of the and Õ¬Äе¼º½ Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies –  will brief Mr Å imonović on the centre’s advocacy, policy and research activities and its partnerships in the region.
