Future pharmacists, lawyers and scientists are among a group of 11 top performing school leavers in the State who started studies at Õ¬Äе¼º½ this week.

The students are all recipients of the , which, this year was awarded to 37 Year 12 graduates.

All award winners received an OP1, an A on the Queensland Core Skills Test, Very High Achievements for their school subjects, and the Queensland Certificate of Education.

Award recipient and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Arts student Shahmir Hassan Ali (pictured left) said he decided to do a dual degree to keep his options open.

“I may either choose to move more towards chemical or environmental engineering, or maybe more towards government or diplomatic work,” he said. 

“Or I might merge my passions and look into organisations such as Engineers Without Borders, or maybe governmental work in the science sector.

“I’m looking forward to being involved in the Õ¬Äе¼º½ community, joining clubs and societies, and hopefully making the best of the Õ¬Äе¼º½ experience both through academics and my social life.”

Will Snell (pictured left) has moved from Mareeba in Far North Queensland to pursue a career in the space industry.

“I’m really excited about building an autonomous watercraft this semester, as well as getting the first tastes of my majors in mechanical and aerospace next year,” he said.

Mr Snell is studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), and has received the Õ¬Äе¼º½ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Bob Faris Educational Bursary.
