A $6.5 million residential wing with room for 50 students has opened at Õ¬Äе¼º½’s .
Women’s College President and former Brisbane Lord Mayor Dr Sallyanne Atkinson said the wing would bring the total enrolments to 253.
“Living on campus is the ultimate way to get the most out of being at University,” Dr Atkinson said.
“It enables students to share studying, play in College sporting teams and make lasting friendships. It takes a university education to a whole new level,” she said.
“This Centenary Wing celebrates the college’s 100th birthday last year and a centenary of providing not only residential accommodation, but also academic and pastoral support to young Queensland women from rural and regional Queensland.”
The Head of College, Adjunct Professor Iyla Davies, welcomed the 230 guests, which included Member for Ryan Ms Jane Prentice, Õ¬Äе¼º½ Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Høj and Õ¬Äе¼º½ Chancellor Mr John Story – whose grandfather, Mr J.D Story, was instrumental in founding Women’s College in 1914.
Women’s College alumni include Dr Atkinson, former Premier Anna Bligh and former Queensland Governor Dr Penelope Wensley.
