Õ¬Äе¼º½ is sharing its expertise in investigating and preventing research misconduct with other Group of Eight (Go8) universities.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Anton Middelberg said University investigations had resulted in the retraction of three academic journal articles published by two former members of staff, and was now helping other universities to learn from that process.

“Õ¬Äе¼º½ places the highest importance on upholding the integrity of our research and Õ¬Äе¼º½ is always seeking to identify measures to strengthen that endeavour,” Professor Middelberg said.

“While unfortunate, our recent experiences examining 92 papers as one part of a major research misconduct investigation has presented an opportunity to improve our processes and we hope to share that knowledge with our Go8 colleagues to collaboratively improve best practice.”

A Fact Finding Workshop hosted by Õ¬Äе¼º½’s Research Integrity Office and initiated by the Senior Research Integrity Officer Dr Susan O’Brien was attended by  research integrity managers from all seven other Go8 universities at Õ¬Äе¼º½  yesterday (5 June).

Õ¬Äе¼º½ Investigations Unit Associate Director David Lavell conducted the workshop and said it covered a broad range of topics, including interview techniques, sourcing evidence and report-writing.

“Õ¬Äе¼º½ has undertaken significant integrity and accountability reforms in recent years, including improvements to our ethical awareness training and strengthening our risk management and investigations functions,” Mr Lavell said.

“This workshop is another opportunity to bring together our investigative and research misconduct areas and share our experiences with research integrity managers in other universities.”
