Travelling to and from Õ¬Äе¼º½’s St Lucia campus is set to get a whole lot better thanks to a planned upgrade of Sir Fred Schonell Drive.
Brisbane City Council is partnering with Õ¬Äе¼º½ to replace the roundabout at the intersection of Sir Fred Schonell Drive, Coldridge Street and Munro Street with traffic lights and a T-junction.
Works, which will be managed by Õ¬Äе¼º½’s Property and Facilities, will start before Easter and finish around July.
Property and Facilities Director Alan Egan said during the works, every attempt would be made to keep traffic flowing but car travellers should factor in delays.
He said these delays would be more pronounced at morning and afternoon on-peak travel times.
“We ask everyone to be careful and patient as there will be lane closures, traffic controllers, a bit of noise, some dust and a lot of fluorescent-clad people working inside traffic barriers,” Mr Egan said.
“In the end we will have a bigger intersection of two lanes each way on Sir Fred Schonell Drive.
“Pedestrians, cyclists, buses and cars will find movement through this intersection at peak hour a great deal safer and quicker.
He said Munro St would be permanently blocked to vehicles.
There will be occasional weekend and night work.
Translink Bus services will continue during the project.
Motorists may experience some traffic delays and local detours may be required during the work.
Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to direct motorists and pedestrians during these works.
“Commuters and pedestrians can look forward to a quicker and safer journey thanks to this upgrade,” Mr Egan said.
