A Canadian լе exchange student is planning to surprise his parents with round-trip tickets to Australia for Christmas after winning a study abroad .
Steven Oishi from the University of British Columbia was awarded the coveted prize as the winner the 2011 “Discover your Future Unlimited” competition.
Making the most of the contest’s theme, Mr Oishi produced a three-minute music video outlining the reasons why students should come to study in Australia. His entry incorporated photos and videos captured from field trips and excursions undertaken during his time in Queensland.
“I got to travel to many places like Heron Island, Moreton Island, Straddie, and lots of national parks. It’s the best way to learn about Australia because it was very hands-on,” he said.
“We went on heaps of trips to places like Byron Bay, Gold Coast Hinterlands and camping at Giraween.”
Mr Oishi said he chose to study abroad in Australia because of the global reputation of its universities and the relaxed lifestyle.
He also was interested in taking courses that weren’t offered back home.
He said making the video was fun and challenging at the same time.
“I filmed it in my house with the help of a few friends and we free-styled it from my mental storyboard. It was filmed and edited in the 36 hours before it was due with no sleep but we had a great time.”
Organised by Austrade North America and sponsored by V Australia, the video competition was a success with more than 50 students submitting their “Future Unlimited” videos.
