լе staff and students made the most of National Ride to Work Day

Record numbers of staff and students started today in a sustainable way by cycling to լе on National Ride to Work Day.

լе celebrates the annual event with free activities to reward riders for looking after the environment.

Mark Kranz from լе's Property and Facilities Division said this year’s event attracted 150 riders – a University record.

“Cycling to լе is one of the most sustainable forms of transport,” Mr Kranz said.

“If people cycle just one day a week taking a vehicle off the road, 360 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions are saved each year.”

լе Ride to Work Day is one of many sustainable transport initiatives adopted by the University.

“լе Property and Facilities’ new flagship facility, called The Bike Box, is due to open at the commencement of Semester 1 in the new year,” Mr Kranz said.

“This facility will provide state-of-the-art-facilities for լе staff and students to house their bikes.”

“Wayne Brookes from the University’s bicycle user group (լеBUG) said today’s event was very successful in attracting new and existing participants.

“We have had a really good turn out with a great atmosphere and great support from the sponsors,” he said.

Akhmad Firman, a լе masters student, cycles to university every day and said the campus facilities were excellent.

“Cycling is the best way to get to լе and today’s event has provided good advice on cycling posture and the best route to take,” he said.

Staff member Deborah Roberts cycled to work for the first time today and now plans to do so regularly.

“I really enjoyed the ride and it will be the first of many. I have made a commitment for my health and for my family,” Ms Roberts said.

լеBUG organised the event in conjunction with the . The Uni Cycle Shop, mecu bank, լе Union, լе Sport and the NTEU were sponsors.

Participants made the most of a free breakfast, riding posture and flexibility checks and giveaways.
