Tennis at the St Lucia campus was given a boost this week with the re-opening five courts after a long closure period due to the January floods.

The tennis centre was one of the worst flood-affected facilities at the University.

With two synthetic grass courts and three hard courts now repaired, the centre is keen to see some tennis action on campus again, however, there are still plenty of repairs to be done.

The centre’s other 16 courts will re-open in stages over the coming months.

Depending on the extent of the flood damage, some courts will be resurfaced while others may need to be partially or totally rebuilt.

The լе Tennis Centre’s Pro Shop also suffered extensive damage in January. While the facility is being rebuilt, the centre has set up a temporary reception and shop next door in the լе Tennis clubhouse.

Venue Manager Alex Reeman-Clark said he had been overwhelmed with the interest and support from students and staff.

“So many people, including students, University staff and local residents, have been regularly contacting us to offer their support and find out when they can get back on court,” Mr Reeman-Clark said.

“It’s been really comforting to know that even though we’ve been out of action for a couple of months, our customers have been so understanding.

“There’s also been a lot of new interest in tennis among the University community so we’re looking forward to seeing not just familiar faces around the courts but also some new ones as well.”

The լе Tennis Centre offers court hire, coaching programs and fixtures for adults and children.

լе students can also hire the courts for free every weekday from 11am – 2pm.
