A լе group has been recognised for successfully linking student volunteers with community projects.
Earlier this month won the top prize at the inaugural Club of the Year Awards Night hosted by .
With 120 different affiliated clubs having participated this year, and a number of different award categories, The Bridge was able to secure themselves the highest honours of the night.
“Winners were selected by 16 independent Union staff and based on self-nominating submissions made by the clubs in order to keep it all above board,” Clubs And Societies Coordinator James Hudson said.
President of The Bridge John O'Bryen said his team was humbled to win the top award.
“It was a nice surprise to recognise the efforts of The Bridge executive team and members," he said.
Based at լе, The Bridge works to promote valuable volunteer experience to interested լе staff and students, bridging them with the community.
Established in 2001, it is Australia's first student formed and led volunteer organisation.
“We are a student-run, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to assisting our volunteers achieve
placements in projects of their choosing,” Mr O’Bryen said.
“Volunteering is the perfect way to meet new people, improve your resume, and develop your sense of social justice.
"Popular projects people volunteer for include tutoring refugee students in English at local high schools and assisting at various community health centres around Brisbane."
The Bridge does not adopt any political ideology or have any religious affiliation, striving to be accessible to anyone who is interested in getting involved in their community through volunteer activities.
They hold fortnightly meetings, biannual volunteer expos and various social events.
"The Bridge has undergone a lot of positive changes in the past two years. It promises to be even bigger and better in 2011," Mr O’Bryen said.
